Have finished Steven Universe S5!! (Some spoilers.)
Such a good twist, so well done. One of the things I'm happy about is how it makes sense of the original credits song. I always thought that was either a random nice song, or meant to apply to Steven... but I guess they knew right from the beginning something like this was how it had been. Which is cool.
And, after trying to take on responsibility in a dumb, proud, destructive way, and having to cope with the repercussions of that with every person he loves, Steven has learned actual responsibility. In spades. It seems like he's exactly who Rose hoped he'd be, now. (I'm still reading Inda: Inda and Steven are quite alike, but child Steven was sheltered from the gem empire, where Inda is entirely a child of the Sartorans at this stage.)
And Sadie has found something to channel her vast energies into, which I love, and Lars is a space-pirate, which... I don't love? I don't really believe that's how he finds his courage and self-hood. Or that he's an intuitive genius at space-fight strategy. Also I wish that while male half-human Steven was coming to leadership of the Crystal Gems, male human Lars was not also coming to leadership of the Off Colours. Sadie could have had that story more plausibly. Connie could have had that story far more plausibly. And it would be nice if Connie had SOME story that wasn't just the walls to Steven's rooms. But. I like Lars' hair, and he looks damn good in a cape, so there's that.
And THERE'S A NEW MAYOR. YAAAAAAAAAY. + THE TOWNPEOPLE ARE ORGANISING. Am so happy.
And there's the thing where all the couples break up and come back together. It seems maybe slightly cheap in retrospect, since none of them actually stay apart. But I don't think it really is. Garnet and Stevonnie both needed to, and they both visibly grow from it. And what Lapis does -- well, I don't know if I quite buy what she does in the end, though I cried quite a lot, but everything before I absolutely believe in. And I believe in Peridot's kind-of-healing. What happens next with them will be interesting.
I really really want Season 6.
(Also I need to rewatch Bismuth's original episode to see just how cruel Rose was to her. I hope she sticks around this time.)
In other news, we're going to Melbourne in two days. It seems quite soon. Also at work today I was given a pair of extremely fancy shoes and lots and lots of coathangers. And sweet coconut water. And semolina cake drenched in rose-and-lemon syrup. Which is called.... I can't remember what it's called. Basically my employers are pretty nice.
